We are thrilled to announce Stephanie Yeung as the newest partner at GGA-Architecture. Stephanie is the first female partner in our firm’s 41-year history, marking a significant milestone in our journey. In a recent interview, she shared her insights and vision while reflecting on her journey and what lies ahead.
Early beginnings
Stephanie’s passion for architecture began in her childhood. She recalls being interested in drawing and writing early on with a fascination for architecture—from rearranging her dollhouse walls and furniture to drawing castles with moats (and eventually building towns in SimCity). Even though she didn’t grow up with an architect in the family, her parents often took her to show homes where she remembers being disappointed that they didn’t match the inspiring designs she saw in magazines. This fueled her desire to build and design her own spaces.
Steph originally started in pre-med but, on a whim, decided to apply to a Bachelor in Environmental Design at the University of Manitoba. After being accepted, she moved east and felt right at home with the holistic approach to architecture that encourages students to look at buildings from a broad scale to minuscule details. Her coursework helped solidify that her true calling was architecture and not interior design due to the “big picture” scale that architects work within.
Just shy of 22 and as a fresh grad, Stephanie Yeung got her start at GGA in the summer of 2006. During the three years at GGA before her Master of Architecture at the University of Calgary, Steph had the unique experience of designing a project from start to finish and under construction by the time she went back to school. She attributes this experience and her design skills flourishing at GGA due to the trust and guidance of mentors, especially fellow Partner Chito Pabustan. Her initial years were marked by significant projects and valuable relationships with colleagues and clients. After a brief hiatus, while gaining experience at another firm and having her first maternity leave, Steph was welcomed back to GGA with open arms as she pursued her dreams of becoming a Partner with renewed focus and determination.

Career milestones for Stephanie Yeung
Stephanie’s career at GGA is a testament to her dedication and skill. Notable milestones include her involvement in projects like District Energy, Mathison Hall and Inspire: Airdrie’s Multi-Use and Library Facility.

Steph recalls how ENMAX District Energy was a major achievement early on since it gave her the experience of being an integral member of a project team and seeing a design through to construction before entering her Master’s degree. “What an amazing opportunity GGA gave me.”
In recent years, she faced a steep learning curve when stepping up as the Project Architect for Mathison Hall to showcase her skills in designing and executing a high-quality building. Balancing multiple projects, leading a team and managing client relationships added complexity, while running the design studio and office presented further challenges. Despite this, support from the Partners and the office made the experience enjoyable and engaging for Steph.
Returning to GGA after years away and as a new mother, she aimed to prove her capability both to the company and herself. Mathison Hall, her dream project in a post-secondary environment, was especially meaningful given she grew up frequenting the University of Calgary since her father was a professor there. She says that “working with the team was a joy and together we delivered an exceptional, award-winning project that I am incredibly proud of.”
The Airdrie Library project, which Steph helped win and will oversee until its completion in 2025, reflects a commitment to innovation and collaboration. Stephanie also highlights her role in the Banff Gondola and Telus Sky projects at a previous firm as formative experiences that honed her leadership skills.

Vision for GGA
As a new partner, Steph’s vision for GGA is to pursue higher levels of design excellence. “We already have the right ingredients and clients,” she says. “I believe our workplace should be fun, vibrant and that our leadership is accessible and approachable.” She aims to bring a diverse perspective to the firm—fostering inclusivity and broadening the firm’s reach. Steph believes that increased diversity in leadership will enhance the firm’s internal culture and client relationships. She is also looking forward to further cultivating the mentorship and support networks at GGA since her growth was contingent on having passionate mentors.
Stephanie Yeung’s final thoughts
Becoming the first female partner is not just a personal achievement but a significant moment for the firm. “I’m excited to navigate the expectations that come with being the first female partner,” she shares. “I hope to be an example for future generations of women at GGA and encourage a culture of support and camaraderie.” Her goal is to make gender equality a non-issue in the industry by demonstrating through action and leadership that progress is possible.
