The modernization of St. Martin de Porres High School in Airdrie is a transformative, multi-year project designed to accommodate up to 1,200 students from grades 8 to 12. Initiated due to significant population growth in Airdrie, this expansion is essential to meet the increasing demand for high school classroom facilities in the city.
The first project phase focuses on demolishing the front of the building and adding key academic and community spaces, including a new Learning Commons, high-tech computer labs, career and technology spaces, a cosmetology suite, and essential classroom spaces. Additional areas such as a cafeteria, chapel, and administrative offices will also be incorporated. Next steps will introduce a new gymnasium, change rooms, physical education spaces, and a Foods lab onto the prior additions.
The secondary phase involves removing portables and creating new Fine Arts spaces, along with additional Career and Technology rooms such as construction, automotive, sports medicine, and science labs. The modernization of remaining classroom spaces will then follow, ensuring the entire facility is updated to meet current educational needs.
Given the school’s need to remain operational during construction, the project requires careful planning and phasing. Mechanical and electrical systems have been designed for seamless integration with the ongoing construction, minimizing disruption to students and faculty. By nearly doubling the school’s size, this modernization will create a vibrant, state-of-the-art learning environment, positioning St. Martin de Porres High School as a future-ready institution in Airdrie.
