Located in Calgary's vibrant Beltline district, the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre stands as a beacon of modern healthcare. This state-of-the-art facility, which features an eight-level medical clinic and office tower, is seamlessly integrated with a two-storey podium dedicated to public functions. Spanning a total of 280,000 square-feet, this innovative structure embodies a new urban concept in healthcare delivery.
The design of the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre is characterized by its high-tech, metal and glass façade which not only enhances its aesthetic appeal, but also reinforces its identity as a distinctive landmark in the Beltline district. An integrated design process and close collaboration with consultants from the project's inception ensured that sustainable and effective solutions were at the forefront of the facility's design.
The Health Centre houses a wide array of services, including urgent care, diagnostic imaging, lab services and specialized clinical programs such as renal dialysis, mental health services and geriatric care. Using universal design principles was vital in ensuring the space will continue to remain flexible and adaptable to the evolving needs of healthcare delivery.
A key feature of the project is the eighth-floor Primary Care Clinic, which was implemented post-construction of the main facility. Extensive measures were taken to manage construction logistics to maintain separation between ongoing operations and construction zones, particularly regarding HVAC, IT and power systems. This careful coordination allowed for a seamless transition to interior design while ensuring that all schedule objectives were met.
Additionally, the project includes 440 underground parking stalls and 250,000 square feet of medical and administrative tenant improvements. A collaborative approach with Alberta Health Services was instrumental in developing evolving IT standards and selecting materials that aligned with project objectives—solidifying the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre as a model for future healthcare facilities.
