This elementary school is located in the southeast quadrant of Calgary in the growing community of Cranston. Designed as a repeat school, adapted to the unique site conditions and context through different site plans and materiality, this schools fit contextually with its single-family residential neighborhoods. The massing of the school is broken down into a series of volumes highlighting the entrance and unique elements like the learning commons. The hip roofs used in the project are sensitive references to the single family homes in the neighborhood and provide opportunities to get natural lighting deeper into the school. This LEED silver project uses highly efficient mechanical systems and LED lighting with an abundance of natural lighting and passive ventilation. The school is both robust, built to stand the test of time, yet warm with glulam beams and natural colour palettes to create a highly functional and inviting learning environment.
