John Ware Building

The phased redevelopment of the John Ware Building, a 1950s landmark at SAIT, created a state-of-the-art space for the culinary arts program while maintaining uninterrupted operations. This comprehensive renovation focused on modernizing the building envelope, upgrading electrical and utility infrastructure and enhancing interior spaces. This renovation revitalizes and future-proofs the John Ware Building to align with SAIT's master plan and accommodate future growth.

A major aspect of the project was the complete overhaul of the building's exterior. Originally featuring masonry and aluminum-framed strip windows, the façade was transformed with modern curtain wall systems, terra cotta cladding, longboard siding and metal panels. These updates refreshed the building's appearance and improved its performance by reducing air leakage and boosting thermal insulation.

Inside, the renovated John Ware Building now serves as the hub for the Food Services Faculty, including offices, classrooms, teaching kitchens and the Highwood Dining Room. The interior renovations included fully upgrading building systems and seamlessly integrating new components with existing mechanical and electrical systems. Cosmetic updates further aligned the building's image with SAIT's modern aesthetic vision.

The renovation was completed in phases to ensure that the building remained operational. Meticulous planning and phased demolition and construction allowed continuous use without disrupting the curriculum. Budgetary oversight at each stage kept the project within the project budget.

Having collaborated with SAIT for the past decade, GGA adhered to "the SAIT Way" principles by balancing respect for the building's heritage with a contemporary, lighter aesthetic. The new design incorporates a warm color palette, bright and naturally lit spaces, expanded public areas and a new marketplace that underscores SAIT's commitment to community engagement.
