ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo Enmax conservatory project evolved around the reuse and reinvention of two 40-year-old greenhouse structures. New energy efficient glazing systems were added to the existing steel structures to provide a more supportive environment for the butterfly and ethnobotany pavilions. Public multi-purpose space was used to inter-connect a combined tea house/chapel, a banquet hall and education spaces. Designed to meet LEED Silver Standards.

Between the butterfly enclosure and primary building sits a lush garden filled with native plants to the Alberta region. On top of the primary building sits solar panels. Visitors can see into the butterfly enclosure where they can walk amidst a kaleidoscope of colorful butterflies where nature and conservation intertwine to create a sanctuary that fosters the preservation of these delicate creatures. An enchanting butterfly sanctuary nestled within a botanical oasis. The exterior of the enclosure is framed by a bright blue sky with fluffy blue clouds scattered across. You can see native plants in the foreground as well as trees flanking the sides of the glass building. Visitors can witness the captivating beauty of butterflies in their natural habitat while supporting sustainable conservation efforts.
