CNRL Engineering Complex

This comprehensive renovation and expansion project transformed the Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNRL) Engineering Complex at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering. The upgrade enhances the facility’s role as a leading centre for engineering research and education by creating a state-of-the-art environment that supports a wide range of engineering disciplines and promotes innovation.

The project involved a detailed Master Plan to modernize and expand the complex, highlighted by adding a 90,000-square-foot infill structure. This new building infills the existing courtyard, introducing a striking light-filled atrium that improves connectivity and provides a versatile, multi-modal learning environment for civil, mechanical, electrical, computer and chemical engineering.

Key upgrades include newly renovated research and teaching labs, updated graduate student offices and modernized common areas. The expansion also features two prominent lecture spaces: a flexible, naturally lit room at the north end and a theatre-style venue at the south end. Both spaces are equipped with cutting-edge AV technology and acoustic treatments.

The renovation emphasizes sustainability with energy-efficient systems, optimized natural light and the reuse of original precast concrete elements. The design highlights a commitment to environmental stewardship while accommodating evolving educational needs through flexible spaces.

Phased construction was meticulously planned to minimize disruption to ongoing academic activities. Through effective stakeholder engagement and careful project management, the revitalization not only updates aging infrastructure but also enhances the campus experience by offering a modern, inspiring and sustainable environment for faculty, staff and students.
