The revitalized Brawn Family Foundation River Lodge at the Calgary Zoo marks a new chapter in animal habitat design. Spanning 10,727 square feet, the exhibit seamlessly blends sensitive site integration with a strong focus on animal well-being, prioritizing the needs of the river otters over architectural spectacle.
The design emphasizes natural behaviours, creating a space that celebrates the otters’ playful nature and distinct personalities. A closed-loop filtration system, enhanced sightlines, and immersive viewing areas support both animal care and visitor engagement.
Visitors enter the redesigned River Lodge through a reimagined pathway, leading into a space defined by multiple vantage points, including overhead views that offer dynamic perspectives of the habitat. Accessibility was central to the design, with inclusive, open areas that encourage exploration and comfort.
The project reflects the strength of interdisciplinary collaboration. GGA led a team of six specialized firms within a construction management framework, ensuring coordinated expertise in habitat design, horticulture, and interpretive storytelling.
The exhibit’s narrative unfolds naturally through its layout, inviting visitors to engage with the otters in a meaningful and educational way. The design integrates themed elements that reflect the animals' spirited character, making each visit both memorable and inspiring.
