Designed in collaboration with groundcubed and delivered as part of the Calgary Zoo’s multi-phase Exploration Asia redevelopment, this project reimagines a series of habitats to create a cohesive, immersive environment that prioritizes animal well-being and visitor engagement. The work includes a new, expanded habitat for snow leopards with a dedicated animal care building and interpretive viewing shelter, a large takin habitat with its own care facility, and an expanded red panda habitat designed as a walk-through experience.
A network of new pathways and landscape features shapes a carefully sequenced visitor journey. Winding routes provide a phased experience while integrating the specific spatial and adjacency requirements of each species. Moments of close proximity are balanced with open viewing areas that allow for direct visual connection, alongside more traditional viewing spaces. Smaller roofed structures are embedded within the landscape to offer sheltered vantage points, creating places for rest while framing curated views into the habitats.
The project also includes the demolition and rehabilitation of the former macaque habitat area, along with the introduction of winter holding facilities for pelicans. Complementing these interventions, the reimagining of the Tiger Trail exhibit transforms the existing habitat into a series of interconnected environments that support dynamic animal movement and varied behavioural expression. Elevated and canopied bridge systems connect habitats, enabling animals to maintain a predator’s perspective while introducing new viewing opportunities for visitors.
Across all components, the design process is informed by species-specific behavioural research, close coordination with horticultural and vegetation strategies, and a focus on accessibility. The result is an integrated environment aligned with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s values, delivering immersive experiences grounded in a rigorous commitment to animal welfare.
