Opened in the fall of 2025, the Airdrie “Inspire” Library & Multi-Use Facility is a visionary project that aims to transform the site of Airdrie’s former fire hall on Main Street into a vibrant community hub. This 85,000-square-foot facility replaced the city’s aging library, offering a modern, engaging, and inclusive space for residents of all ages.
At the heart of the project is a 60,000-square-foot library designed to be much more than just a home for books. It features a variety of programming spaces, including early childhood learning nooks, makerspaces, art studios, and AV rooms. A community living room with a vapour fireplace overlooking the street provides a cozy gathering spot for games, books, and conversation, inviting passersby to engage with the space.
The 25,000-square-foot multi-use area accommodates a wide range of activities, from performances and workshops to community meetings and events. The design emphasizes flexibility, ensuring the space can adapt to the evolving needs of Airdrie’s diverse community groups.
A key feature of the facility is the Indigenous Space, developed in consultation with local Elders and knowledge keepers. This space includes a round room adjacent to the exterior, providing a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor programming. The use of wood materials and theming reflects Indigenous culture, while supporting rooms offer spaces for mentorship and counselling. The design also accommodates smudging and ceremonial activities, ensuring these important cultural practices take place without impacting the rest of the building.
Accessibility and sustainability are central to the design, with features like barrier-free public washrooms, intuitive wayfinding, strategic daylighting, and xeriscaping. The Airdrie “Inspire” Library & Multi-Use Facility also incorporates above-and-beyond accessibility considerations, following the latest guidelines and input from accessibility focus groups.
