1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport & Wellness

The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness at the University of Lethbridge represents a major expansion and renovation of the previously underutilized Physical Education and Student Union Building. Located at the campus entrance, this upgraded facility significantly improves accessibility and enhances campus life. The expansion introduces an expanded triple gymnasium with 2,000 spectator seats, a 200-metre elevated indoor running track and a 935-square-metre fitness centre. The track also serves as a spectator concourse for special events with top-loading retractable seating.

In addition, this renovation includes a new climbing wall, multipurpose rooms as well as upgraded Kinesiology teaching labs and sports medicine facilities. The expanded locker rooms and reconfigured existing spaces offer improved functionality and a better user experience. The design prioritizes sustainability, with a notable portion of the facility’s energy is supplied by wind power from a contract with McGrath Wind Farm.

Drawing inspiration from Arthur Erickson’s University Hall, the building’s low, horizontal profile seamlessly integrates with the surrounding natural landscape and minimizes visual impact. The project was carefully phased to reduce disruption, with a collaborative design team ensuring the renovation honours the campus’s architectural heritage while incorporating modern amenities. This transformation not only enhances the University of Lethbridge’s recreational and educational facilities but also reinforces its commitment to sustainability and design excellence—establishing the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness as a vibrant and enduring hub for both the campus and the City of Lethbridge for years to come.
