Welcome to the newly completed FFCA North High School Campus in Calgary, Alberta. This innovative facility is more than just a place of learning—it’s a hub for fostering community and leadership among its 1,000 students in grades 9 to 12. The school’s design transcends traditional architecture, creating spaces that inspire, connect and embody the unique program and philosophy of Foundations for the Future Charter Academy.

Reimagining space and community

The journey of the FFCA North High School Campus began with a challenge—the former school’s roof was deemed structurally unsound. Rather than simply repairing it, the school board took the opportunity to build a facility that would better serve its students and the broader community. The new campus, located on a steep slope in Montgomery, fully leverages the topography, offering stunning views and integrating seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

The upper bench was highly under utilized and somewhat inaccessible, particularly for those with limited mobility. The new facility has improved access to the upper bench which takes full advantage of the site offerings.

The Learning Commons at the Heart of the School

The Learning Commons is a vibrant centre of the campus, a three-story hub where students gather to learn, socialize and collaborate. With tiered seating and triple-height glazing that connects the indoors to the natural landscape, this space enhances both educational and social experiences. Integrated within this area is the assembly space, which spans all three floors, offering distinct zones for various activities—from formal presentations to social interactions and collaborative group study areas equipped with modern amenities.

FFCA North High School’s Design Embraces the Landscape

The architectural design of the FFCA North High School Campus masterfully embraces the site’s steep, multi-plateaued slope by rotating the building 90 degrees from its original footprint, reclaiming green spaces and playfields for the community. This creative east-west orientation not only harmonizes with the natural contours through horizontal façade striations but also enhances the building’s functionality and accessibility. By integrating the structure with the landscape, the design promotes sustainability, environmental stewardship and better visibility and access for students and the community.

A School that Reflects its Philosophy

The design of the FFCA North High School Campus is deeply rooted in the school’s educational philosophy, which blends traditional teaching methods with contemporary approaches. The design team approached every area of the school as an opportunity for learning, maximizing the use of space. Corridors were transformed into versatile “third spaces,” catering to group collaboration, independent study, social interaction and other fundamental aspects of a student’s secondary school experience. Moreover, the building’s design ensures future adaptability to evolving classroom technologies, ensuring that it remains relevant and functional for years to come.

The program offerings at FFCA, such as an indoor climbing wall, create a campus feel that mirrors a post-secondary institution and enables students to engage in diverse activities on campus without having to leave the facility. This school not only educates but also empowers students as they prepare for their futures after graduation.

Final Thoughts on FFCA North High School

The FFCA North High School Campus is a forward-thinking educational facility that not only meets the evolving needs of students but also serves as a community landmark. With its innovative design and sustainable features, this campus sets a new standard for environmentally responsible architecture in Calgary, ensuring it will benefit both students and the community for generations to come.

We hope this virtual tour has given you a glimpse into the thoughtful design and vision behind this remarkable project.
